Ahead of Pro-Coal Trump Rally in WV, 314 Action Calls on Dean Heller to Denounce Trump’s Energy Plan

(Washington, D.C.) -- Today, 314 Action, a national advocacy organization formed to elect scientists and STEM professionals to public office and promote evidence-based policy making, called on Dean Heller to oppose the Trump Administration’s Dirty Power Plan.

Acting EPA administrator and former coal lobbyist Andrew Wheeler announced the plan Tuesday. It will replace the Obama Administration’s Clean Power Plan that would implement a number of science based policies to drastically reduce carbon emissions from power plants, the largest single source of pollution in the U.S. The Trump plan would increase carbon emissions and other pollutants associated with burning coal.

Ted Bordelon, Director of Communications for 314 Action, released the following statement:

“This is not a plan based on sound science. It’s a political payoff for Trump and Dean Heller’s allies in the coal industry. Heller has voted time and again against science-based safeguards designed to reduce carbon emissions and limit pollutants like methane and ozone. It’s clear he puts a higher priority on the bottom line of the coal industry than on his constituents.”

314 Action has endorsed computer scientist Jacky Rosen.

EPA’s scientists acknowledge the plan will lead to higher carbon emissions and as many as 1,400 premature deaths per year, more missed school and work days, and added health costs for people because of pollution related illnesses like asthma.

314 Action is the largest and only resource specifically created for scientists and STEM professionals seeking assistance running for office. 314 Action was founded by members of the STEM community, grassroots supporters and political activists. Formed in July 2016, 314 Action has over 400,000 active members and donors across the United States. 314 Action is concerned that STEM education in the United States is falling further and further behind the rest of the world, that our political leaders continue to deny scientific facts and that Congress fails to fully fund scientific research so we can solve pressing issues.
