314 Action Endorses Physicist and Computer Programmer Governor Phil Bredesen for U.S. Senate in Tennessee
Gov. Bredesen Swept All 96 Counties in 2016; Cook Political Report Calls Race a “Toss Up”
(Washington, D.C.) -- Today, 314 Action announced its endorsement of Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen, running for U.S. Senate in Tennessee. The endorsement marks 314 Action’s second Senate-level endorsement this cycle, following the endorsement of Jacky Rosen in Nevada.
President of 314 Action, Shaughnessy Naughton, released the following statement:
“Phil Bredesen is not only a proven winner on the campaign trail, he already has a strong track record of working hard for the people Tennessee. As Governor, he helped bring new jobs and investment to the state and guided Tennessee through the Great Recession, putting its economy in a better position than it was at the outset. Phil’s training as a scientist and experience as a businessman will bring common sense problem solving to the issues most affecting and important to Tennesseans: health care, the opioid epidemic, economic opportunity and security. The nearly 400,000 members of 314 Action are proud to stand with Phil’s campaign, and we couldn’t be more excited to put a staunch defender of science in Tennessee’s Senate seat.”
Quick facts about Phil:
Phil is a Harvard-trained physicist, who went on to program computers in FORTRAN and eventually worked as a manager at a company specializing in mini-computers in medical care. Phil founded a healthcare company in Nashville which he sold in 1986.
Phil was elected Mayor of Nashville in 1991, and Governor of Tennessee in 2002. As Mayor, he revitalized Nashville’s downtown, and as Governor, he guided the state through the Great Recession without imposing an income tax or raising the sales tax. He has prioritized putting more funding into education and investing more in creating jobs for the people of Tennessee.
Phil’s race presents one of the best pick-up opportunities in the Senate in 2018, with the Cook Political Report rating it a “Toss Up,” and recent polling showed Phil outpacing GOP frontrunner Marsha Blackburn.
