2017: Another “Hottest Year”
314 Action Electing Scientists to Stand Up To Climate Change Deniers and Reverse Warming Trend
(Washington, D.C.) -- Government scientists reported today that 2017 was one of the hottest years in recorded history. Temperature records go back to 1880, and 17 of the 18 hottest years have occurred since 2001.
This year’s record is part of a trend. It is only becoming clearer the planet is warming and human activity is the cause. Yet the Trump Administration, cheered on by its enablers in the GOP Congress, is rolling back climate-related environmental protections and silencing federal scientists from speaking out. At the same time they are opening up new land for oil drilling while calling climate change a “hoax” and “fake news.”
314 Action is the only organization committed to recruiting, training and electing scientists and STEM professionals to public office who will take an evidence-based stand against climate change deniers in Congress and special interest groups pushing a dirty energy agenda.
Shaughnessy Naughton, President of 314 Action, released the following statement:
“314 Action is committed to reversing this trend. That’s why we’re recruiting scientists to run for office and supporting their campaigns. Denial of basic science is disqualifying for any candidate for office, especially following a year in which lives were lost and billions of taxpayer dollars will be spent recovering from disasters made worse by climate change. The trend of silencing scientists who speak out against this Administration’s agenda must stop, and our endorsed candidates are committed to doing just that. We can no longer afford to leave science out of the debate.”
314 Action is the largest and only resource specifically created for scientists and STEM professionals seeking assistance running for office. 314 Action is a nonprofit 501(c)(4) that was founded by members of the STEM community, grassroots supporters and political activists. Formed in July 2016, 314 Action has over 400,000 active members and donors across the United States. 314 Action is concerned that STEM education in the United States is falling further and further behind the rest of the world, that our political leaders continue to deny scientific facts and that Congress fails to fully fund scientific research so we can solve pressing issues.
