314 Action Founder Fires Back at Rep. Lamar Smith’s Op-Ed on “Benefits” of Climate Change

(Washington, D.C.) -- In response to Rep. Lamar Smith’s (TX-21) op-ed published today in the Heritage Foundation’s Daily Signal, Shaughnessy Naughton, 314 Action’s founder, released the following statement:

“Representative Smith’s argument that the so-called ‘benefits’ of climate change somehow outweigh the dire consequences presented by the rapid warming of our planet—rapidly rising sea levels, famine and war, to name a few—is the latest in his pattern of industry-funded attacks on scientific consensus around the issue. It is disappointing that even his recent trip to the Antarctic apparently failed to impress upon the Congressman that climate change caused by carbon emissions is a pressing problem.

Rather than playing the hits to the Heritage Foundation’s mouthpiece, I challenge Mr. Smith to explain the benefits of climate change to the displaced people of Isle de Jean Charles or Tangier Island. If climate scientists can’t convince him, maybe our country’s first climate refugees can.”

314 Action is targeting Lamar Smith as part of the Under the Scope campaign, which aims to magnify members of Congress who are anti-science. For a detailed background on Smith’s past votes and campaign contributions, click HERE.
