314 Action Endorses U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich for Re-Election Bid
Heinrich Has a Background in Engineering, Has Stood Against the Trump Administration’s Attacks on Scientific Research
(Washington, D.C.) -- Today, 314 Action announced its endorsement of U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich in his re-election bid in New Mexico. 314 Action is adding him to its list of STEM Trailblazers, incumbent members of Congress with STEM backgrounds who have a proven record of standing up for science while in office.
Senator Heinrich, one of the few members of Congress with a background in science and technology, brings a unique perspective to the Senate. He is committed to using science as a basis for decision making and has challenged the Trump administration's attempts to undermine and politicize scientific research. He grew renewable energy use by passing federal tax credits incentivizing wind and solar production that have led to a clean energy boom across the country. He has also engaged students at every level in STEM education, and led the charge in the Senate to reinstate federal funding for gun violence research. He epitomizes the notion that technology and science-driven policies are how we can best meet many of our 21st century challenges.
Senator Heinrich earned a degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Missouri, and worked in energy technology at Phillips Laboratories, now the Air Force Research Laboratory at Kirtland Air Force base. He also served as Executive Director of the environmental nonprofit the Cottonwood Gulch Foundation.
Senator Martin Heinrich released the following statement:
“I am proud to be endorsed by 314 Action. I firmly believe Congress should use science as our guiding light when finding policy solutions. Too many in Washington still choose to ignore the facts. My engineering background has been an asset in my work to create good, sustainable jobs in growing industries like renewable energy. I encourage those who value science and data to get involved in politics, now more than ever.”
Shaughnessy Naughton, President of 314 Action, released the following statement:
“Senator Heinrich has made it clear during his tenure in the Senate that he is a fierce advocate for science and an ally to the scientific community. From his defense of scientific research funding against the Trump Administration’s attempts to politicize it to his unflinching commitment to supporting the renewable energy industry, the Senator has proven willing to go to bat for evidence-based policy time and time again. 314 Action is proud to endorse Senator Heinrich as he runs for re-election in New Mexico, and our network of nearly 500,000 supporters will be behind him on election day to help him continue the fight for science in office.”
314 Action is the largest and only resource specifically created for scientists and STEM professionals seeking assistance running for office. 314 Action was founded by members of the STEM community, grassroots supporters and political activists. Formed in July 2016, 314 Action has over 400,000 active members and donors across the United States. 314 Action is concerned that STEM education in the United States is falling further and further behind the rest of the world, that our political leaders continue to deny scientific facts and that Congress fails to fully fund scientific research so we can solve pressing issues.
