314 Action Launches “Under the Scope” to Magnify Members of Congress Who Are Anti-Science

Program Will Highlight Denials of Basic Science and Climate Change, and 314 Action Will Activate Its Growing Network of Pro-Science Advocates Toward Targeted Reps

(Washington, D.C.) -- Today, Shaughnessy Naughton, founder of 314 Action, announced “Under the Scope,” a targeted program to magnify members of Congress who are anti-science. The announcement was made on Pi Day, during 314 Action’s first candidate training webinar.

“314 Action is ready to take our network of pro-science advocates to the doorsteps of Representatives across the country who deny science,” said Naughton. “The House Science Committee has been devastating to science under Chairman Lamar Smith’s leadership, and it’s time for those who stand for science, facts and reason to organize and push back.”

Included in the first round of targeted representatives are three members of the House Science Committee who have never studied or worked in science but, as Congressmen, have worked to deny basic scientific facts:

Lamar Smith (TX-21)
As chairman, Smith has issued more subpoenas to silence scientists than ever before
Smith took more than $700k from oil and gas executives and their lobbyists
Recently, Smith secured the ability to reduce the annual salary of any Federal scientist to $1
Dana Rohrabacher (CA-48)
Rohrabacher has stated that he believes his position on the Science Committee needs to be a soapbox to counter the “phony science” of the Democratic party
He has publicly suggested climate change might be caused by flatulence from dinosaurs
Rohrabacher has voted to give Exxon-Mobil and Shell five-year leases on the outer Continental shelf despite their resistance to creating safety reforms that would protect against catastrophic spills - all while taking more than a quarter million dollars from the oil and gas industries
Steve Knight (CA-25)
Knight  has voted to prohibit the use of funds for the EPA’s law enforcement and criminal investigations division
He voted against closing loopholes in the Clean Air Act
The oil and gas industry has given more than $50,000 in campaign contributions to Knight

An Under the Scope website has been launched at 314action.org/underthescope detailing each of these Representatives’ votes against science, campaign contributions from the oil and gas lobbyists and in their own words demonstrating their backwards views on widely accepted scientific facts.

Under the Scope is not limited to members of the House Science Committee, and more targets will be added throughout this and future election cycles.

314 Action is a nonprofit 501(c)(4) that was founded by members of the STEM community, grassroots supporters and political activists. Despite being a recently formed organization, 314 Action has over 100,000 active members and donors across the United States. 314 Action is concerned that STEM education in the United States is falling further and further behind the rest of the world, that our political leaders continue to deny scientific facts and that Congress fails to fully fund scientific research so we can solve pressing environmental issues like climate change and social problems like gun violence.
