314 Action Congratulates Biochemist Sean Casten on Strong Finish in IL-06
314 Action Fund Supported Sean with Significant Direct Mail Program, PAC Contributions and Logistical Support
(Washington, D.C.) - 314 Action, the largest organization created specifically for scientists and STEM professionals running for office, congratulated biochemist and clean tech entrepreneur Sean Casten for his strong finish in Illinois’ 6th Congressional District.
From the start of his campaign, Sean has championed the shared values of the 314 Action community, including a commitment to battle climate change, an emphasis on evidence-based policy and a commitment to challenge the Trump Administration on science-related issues. Sean ran a strong campaign against Rep. Peter Roskam, and held the incumbent accountable for his voting record which is almost entirely in lockstep with President Donald Trump.
314 Action Fund supported Sean with a direct mail plan to 52,000 houses in the district that called Roskam out for his disastrous record on healthcare and his silence on the Sterigenics crisis which unfolded during the last months of the campaign. Roskam remained almost entirely silent when it was revealed that Sterigenics, a sterilization plant within IL-06, was emitting toxic fumes that threatened thousands of people within the district.
In addition to 314 Action Fund’s independent expenditure, 314 Action provided PAC contributions as well as logistical support to the campaign.
Shaughnessy Naughton, President of 314 Action, issued the following statement:
“Sean Casten ran a strong campaign rooted in holding Rep. Peter Roskam accountable and presenting a new direction for the Sixth District. I am certain that he will be a tireless advocate for the constituents of the Sixth District, and a staunch defender of science in the halls of Congress. 314 Action and our network of nearly 500,000 supporters are proud to send a biochemist to Washington.”
314 Action is the largest and only resource specifically created for scientists and STEM professionals seeking assistance running for office. Formed in July 2016, 314 Action has over 400,000 active members and donors across the United States. 3 For more information, visit 314action.org
