314 Action Endorsed Scientists Call Out Peter Roskam for EPA Funding After Pollution Revelations

In-District Company, Sterigenics, Was Emitting Cancer-Causing Chemicals Near a Residential Area

(Washington, D.C.) -- Today, 3 candidates endorsed by 314 Action, the largest organization created specifically for scientists and STEM professionals running for office, called out Rep. Peter Roskam (IL-06) for his inaction on EPA funding, despite new revelations of a cancer-causing agent being released in the 6th District, endangering the public health of Roskam’s constituents.

This morning, Sean Casten (Democratic candidate for IL-06), Rep. Bill Foster (IL-11) and Tom Chlystek (HD-82), held a press conference to bring attention to news of the dangerous emissions and to call on Roskam to fully fund the EPA, something he has refused to do.

Director of Communications for 314 Action, Ted Bordelon, released the following statement:

“Representative Peter Roskam has demonstrated again that he is an out of touch politician more concerned with the special interests that are bankrolling his re-election campaign than the public health of his constituents. When it comes to keeping air and water clean and safe, the Sixth District—and, frankly, all Americans—deserve better.”

Roskam has a long history of undermining the EPA by supporting extreme budget cuts and anti-environmental policy riders designed to tie the agency’s hands on behalf of polluters.

Last year, Roskam supported Trump’s attempt to slash the EPA’s budget by $2 billion (The EPA’s annual budget is ~$8 billion) severely weakening the EPA’s ability to enforce clean air, clean water, and public health safeguards for communities. (Vote 492, 2017). He also voted to completely DEFUND the EPA's criminal law enforcement activities, making it easier for polluters to get away egregious environmental crimes. (Vote 482, 2017). The EPA’s criminal enforcement division caught Volkswagen rigging emissions tests, and in the recent past has stopped people and businesses selling dangerously contaminated oil for re-use, using hazardous pesticides inside nursing homes, and illegally removing dangerous asbestos.

314 Action is the largest and only resource specifically created for scientists and STEM professionals seeking assistance running for office. 314 Action was founded by members of the STEM community, grassroots supporters and political activists. Formed in July 2016, 314 Action has over 400,000 active members and donors across the United States. 314 Action is concerned that STEM education in the United States is falling further and further behind the rest of the world, that our political leaders continue to deny scientific facts and that Congress fails to fully fund scientific research so we can solve pressing issues.
