Dr. Amish Shah is the Congressman-elect for Arizona’s 1st Congressional District, defeating Trump-endorsed Republican Jay Feely and flipping one of the most competitive House seats in the country. In response, 314 Action President Shaughnessy Naughton released the following statement:
“Congratulations to the next Congressman for Arizona’s 1st Congressional District, Dr. Amish Shah,” said Shaughnessy Naughton, President of 314 Action. “Dr. Shah has spent his career in the emergency room, caring for every patient who comes through the door. He saw what happened to patients when Republicans in Washington cut Medicaid and stripped away ACA tax credits, and he ran to stop it. Jay Feely ran as Donald Trump’s handpicked candidate in a district that wanted someone willing to stand up to him. Voters rejected him.”
“Two years ago, Dr. Shah came within a few points of winning this seat. He came back, outworked the field and finished the job. He was one of the most effective legislators in Arizona because he focused on results, and he will bring that same approach to a Congress that has handed RFK Jr. control of our nation’s vaccine policy.”
The race for AZ-01 was one of the most expensive House races on the map. Despite being outspent by nearly $8.5 million, Dr. Shah flipped this crucial battleground by a decisive margin to join the Democratic majority in Washington.
314 Action Fund endorsed Dr. Shah in 2024 and stood with him again this cycle, forming a six-figure Joint Fundraising Committee and backing his campaign with a $300,000 television ad highlighting his work saving lives in the emergency room during his competitive primary. In the general election, 314 Action Fund poured in an additional $1.1 million in digital and TV ads. The seat opened after Republican Rep. David Schweikert left to run for governor. Dr. Shah won a competitive four-way primary in July despite outside spending against him, then carried that momentum through November against a Republican nominee recruited and endorsed by Trump.
Dr. Shah is an emergency physician who continues to practice in the heart of the district, where he sees firsthand the challenges families face getting quality, affordable care. He also served as an airway management physician on the sidelines for the New York Jets. From 2019 to 2024, he served in the Arizona House of Representatives, where he passed more bills than any other Arizona Democrat in the last decade.
