Epidemiologist and former Detroit health director would be first Democratic doctor serving in the U.S. Senate in nearly 60 years
Dr. Abdul El-Sayed is the official Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate in Michigan, defeating Rep. Haley Stevens in a top race for Democrats in November. In response, 314 Action President Shaughnessy Naughton released the following statement:

Abdul El-Sayed rebuilt Detroit’s health department from bankruptcy and delivered results Michiganders could feel: a program that will cancel up to $700 million in medical debt for 300,000 people in the state, lead removed from schools, and kids getting glasses they needed. That’s the record voters chose and it’s exactly what we need in the Senate as Trump and RFK Jr. gut public health agencies and slash healthcare.

Dr. Abdul El-Sayed is an epidemiologist, Rhodes Scholar, and served 1.8 million Michiganders as the former director of Detroit’s Health Department and Wayne County’s Department of Health, Human & Veterans Services.
