With her victory in tonight’s primary, former Congresswoman and nuclear engineer Elaine Luria is the official Democratic nominee in Virginia’s 2nd Congressional District. In response, 314 Action President Shaughnessy Naughton released the following statement:
“Congratulations to Elaine Luria on her decisive victory in Virginia’s 2nd Congressional District. Her proven leadership is needed in Congress now more than ever and tonight’s win is a step towards getting more scientists in Washington.
“As a former Congresswoman, Navy veteran and nuclear engineer, Elaine Luria has led a life of service and delivered for Virginians. She voted to lower prescription drug prices, passed the largest expansion of veterans’ healthcare in recent history, and invested in the entire Commonwealth, while Representative Kiggans voted to cut health insurance from 300,000 Virginians and put 13 rural hospitals in Virginia at-risk of closing.”
“Voters are looking for leaders who will take on corruption and healthcare costs in Washington and that’s what Elaine will do. Elaine Luria served as a naval officer for 20 years, where she operated nuclear reactors as an engineer. She was first elected to represent Virginia’s 2nd Congressional District in 2018, where she held the longest active-duty tenure of any current member of the House Democratic Caucus. She passed the largest expansion of veterans’ healthcare in recent history through the PACT Act. After serving for two terms, Elaine has spent the last several years working to elect Democrats to the Virginia General Assembly.
