(Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) — With his victory in tonight’s primary, former public high school math teacher Jake Johnson is the official Democratic nominee in Minnesota’s 1st Congressional District. In response, 314 Action President Shaughnessy Naughton released the following statement:
“Congratulations to Jake Johnson on his decisive victory in Minnesota’s 1st Congressional District. Voters can see the math isn’t adding up in Washington—and they’re ready for change. It’s why Jake’s data-driven leadership and experience as a problem-solver are resonating with Minnesotans across the district.
“As the administration spends billions on endless wars while slashing funding for healthcare, Minnesotans are struggling to pay for daily expenses. Representative Brad Finstad has failed Minnesota and refused to face his own constituents at in-person town halls. Meanwhile, Jake has shown up in every corner of the district. Ahead of the primary, Jake held 12 in-person town halls, meeting with hundreds of voters across the state. His campaign helped move the needle with Cook Political, adjusting their rating to ‘Lean R,’ and elevating MN-01 to a target Red to Blue race.
“Minnesotans are looking for a leader who will stick to Minnesota values, stand up for them, and deliver. That’s exactly what Jake will do in Congress. Minnesota’s 1st Congressional District has been red for over seven years, but Jake will be the one to flip it. 314 Action Fund was proud to endorse him earlier this year and we look forward to supporting his campaign through November.”
Jake Johnson has been a high school math teacher for the past 20 years, teaching AP calculus through remedial math at Rochester Public Schools. His dedication to his students has made him a two-time recipient of the highest recognition in the state for math education. He is running for Congress to bring down costs, take on corruption, and invest in small towns, so that his students have a shot at the American Dream just like he did. In the last two FEC reports, Jake outraised Rep. Brad Finstad by more than $100,000 and $130,000 respectively.
