314 Action Statement on Marty Makary Resigning as FDA Commissioner

May 12, 2026

(Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) — Today, POLITICO first reported Marty Makary is resigning from his role as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) commissioner after just 13 months. In response, 314 Action President Shaughnessy Naughton released the following statement:

“Despite all of his attempts to show loyalty, FDA Commissioner Marty Makary is the latest casualty in Donald Trump’s return to an Apprentice-style presidency, though RFK Jr. insists “he made the call.” Let me be clear: voters don’t care who made the call, they want affordable healthcare, low drug prices and access to safe and effective medication—and that’s what they deserve from their next FDA Commissioner.

“Under Commissioner Makary, the FDA approved flavored vape products that are a gateway to nicotine for children, loosened restrictions on unproven peptides and failed to expedite drug approval process for life-saving treatments. But, he was quick to promote the sham-drug pricing platform known as TrumpRX.

“For Americans to have access to the treatments of tomorrow, we need an FDA led and run by competent scientists, with a regulatory and drug approval process that is clear and consistent. Makary’s tenure and unceremonious departure marks yet another failure of the Trump Administration, that continues to waste time and resources while Americans battling life-threatening diseases have neither to lose.”
